Vet-recommended knee support

Dog owners filmed what changed when they braced both back knees

The brace slides off the second your dog lies down. Or the vet quoted thousands, and now you're watching the other back leg too. Owners of almost 8,000 dogs have been there. Here's what they filmed.

Let's show off our little brace support… This thing has been amazing.

Agustin P., filming his pit bull mix, Mia

The problem
A limp on her left back leg that kept coming back
What he did
Put her in the brace and filmed their walk

What to watch: where the sleeves sit as she walks. The harness holds them up, not her thighs. Tap the video to hear Agustin.

For owners who already tried a brace

We tried two different brands first and they were junk.

Jennifer F., owner of Koda, a German Shepherd

We hear this more than anything. Most knee braces are just a sleeve, held up by your dog's thigh. But a thigh is shaped like a cone. So when your dog sits or lies down, the sleeve slides.

Watch Vinny sit down. Keep your eyes on the sleeves.

The three parts of the Wag Wize brace on a red heeler: the full-body harness, the rear strap and the hinged sleeves on both back legs
The Hang & Hinge System: the sleeves hang from a full-body harness, a rear strap holds them high, and a removable metal hinge sits at each knee.

Very impressed with the quality of this harness… This one fits great and is a very well made product. It gives my Koda the support she needs to get back to doing her favorite thing in life.

The harness does keep both braces from slipping and I do have to take it off when its hot because its neoprene. But in my opinion its a good product.

For owners worried about the other knee

I didn't want her to injure that leg next.

Sonya C., Border Collie owner

Sonya saw her dog leaning harder on her good back leg. That's common. When one knee hurts, a dog shifts weight to the other back leg.1 That's why vets watch the second knee. About 1 in 3 dogs that tear a knee ligament later tear the other one too.2

A dog seen from behind. The sore back knee is circled, and the other back leg glows orange because it is working extra hard to carry the weight.

So it's one kit for both back legs. No buying one sleeve now and another one later.

I purchased the Dual-Leg Hinged Knee Support Harness as soon as I realized that she was heavily relying on her other leg to walk, and I didn't want her to injure that leg next… I can tell it's given her a lot more confidence when she walks.

Most of the dogs we hear about are seniors. Their owners want the small things back: the walk, the car ride, the spot on the couch.

Surgery felt too risky and expensive, so I tried the Wag Wize brace to support both back legs. He's still getting used to it, but I already see him walking more balanced and steady.

Honest note: a brace is a support, not a fix. It won't repair a torn ligament. It supports your dog on walks while you and your vet decide what's next.

For owners wondering if their dog will wear it

It only took her 3 days to get used to the braces.

Sonja P., verified buyer

  1. Day 1

Some dogs freeze or walk stiffly the first time. Keep it to 5 or 10 minutes with treats, then take it off.

When we put it on our dog she didn't want to walk.
    Sara P.
  2. Days 2 to 4

Most dogs settle in. Put it on right before something your dog loves, like a walk.

Ace was a little unsure at first. Once we encouraged him to get up and move around, he adapted quickly.
    Patricia K.
  3. After that

Many owners use it during the day and take it off at night. Check the fit after your dog lies down.

I have not seen my dog do zoomies in a while after the 3rd day he had the zomies.

For owners waiting on surgery, or after it

He can wear his WagWize again as soon as his stitches are out.

From a surgeon's after-care sheet, shared by Eric K.

Some owners use it while they wait for a surgery date. Others use it after surgery, once their vet says it's okay. Charmaine's dog Jesse started limping again two years after his knee surgery.

3 reasons not to buy this kit

  1. Your vet says only one leg needs support. This kit is built for both.
  2. Your dog can't stand on the back legs.A lift sling may be a better fit. Ask your vet.
  3. You want to skip the harness. The harness is what holds the sleeves up. It's the whole idea.

None of those sound like your dog? Then this was built for them.

Questions owners ask us most

Will it slide down my dog's leg?

That's the problem with sleeve-only braces: they have nothing to hang from. This one clips to a full-body harness, and the rear strap holds both sleeves high on the thigh. Measure for a snug fit, and check the fit after your dog lies down, especially in the first week.

Why does it cost $149.98?

You get two hinged sleeves, one for each back leg, plus the full-body harness that holds them up. Most braces are sold one leg at a time, with no harness.

Will my dog accept it?

Most dogs settle in within a few days. Some freeze or walk stiffly the first time, which is normal. Start with short sessions and treats, and put it on right before a walk.

Can my dog pee and poop with it on?

Yes. No need to take it off for potty breaks.

My dog has one bad knee. Why support both?

When one knee is weak, the other back leg carries extra weight. Supporting both keeps the load more even, and it's one kit, so you never buy a second sleeve later.

Do I need a vet visit first?

Many owners ask their vet before starting. The brace is a support your dog can wear on walks while you and your vet decide on a plan. If your vet mentioned surgery, ask them when the brace is okay to wear.

What if it doesn't fit?

The 60-Day Perfect Fit Guarantee covers an exchange for another size, or store credit. Braces are not refundable, and you pay to ship the brace back to us. That's why we ask you to measure first.

How long does shipping take?

Shipping is free to the U.S. and Canada and takes 8–12 business days. Popular sizes sell out, and restocks can take a few weeks.

Is it right for every dog?

It's made for dogs that can stand and walk on their back legs. Very short-legged breeds (like Corgis, Dachshunds, Bassets and Bulldogs) need a different fit, so message us first. If your dog can't put any weight on a leg, has an open wound, or is suddenly in bad shape, see your vet first.

They still want the walk.

Give both back legs the support to take it. One kit, harness included, and 60 days to get the fit right.

1. Souza ANA, Tatarunas AC, Matera JM. Evaluation of vertical forces in the pads of Pitbulls with cranial cruciate ligament rupture. BMC Vet Res. 2014;10:51. In dogs with one torn ligament, the injured back leg pushed down with about 24% of body weight, while the other back leg pushed down with about 39%, more than the 33–34% measured in healthy dogs.

2. Harasen G. Canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture in profile. Can Vet J. 2003;44(10):845–846. Advises owners to expect about a 1 in 3 chance of the other ligament tearing. See also Chuang C, et al. PLoS One. 2014;9(9):e106389, where 33% of 85 dogs went on to tear the other ligament.
